Strengthening Forest Management in Post-Conflict Liberia

Strengthening Forest Management in Post-Conflict Liberia

Forests Monitor conducted a training workshop in Liberia in 2008. This was aimed at improving understanding within the government of the skills and capacity needed for effective law enforcement. Participants came from the Forestry Development Authority (FDA) and Environment Protection Authority (EPA) as well as a number of local NGOs.

The workshop covered monitoring of policy implementation and law enforcement in the forestry sector, the legislative framework for enforcement, collecting standardised and accurate data, and documenting local environmental, social and economic impacts. Training was also provided in the use of GPS, photographic documentation and the collection of oral testimonies.

The report from the first workshop is available here (size: 410 kb).

Forests Monitor is preparing an introductory manual on the process of monitoring policy implementation and law enforcement in the Liberian context, which will be available soon from this website.
