THE CHALLENGE

How do we ensure that development of fragile forest areas does not lead to the deterioration of the forests themselves? How do we ensure that traditional rights of indigenous forest peoples are upheld? How do we ensure that development and/or conservation is inclusive and equitable, and does not favour one group over another? How do we ensure that the benefits of development are fairly distributed over the long-term between private companies, the state and local populations? Should we restrict or halt commercial forestry operations if they exacerbate poverty, degrade the forests and diminish local peoples future rights to healthy forests?

The solutions to some of these problems will require radical changes in power balances, and the approach to forest management and policy formation.

Forests Monitor was set up in 1993 to deal with this challenge. We are a non-profit making, non-governmental organization. By providing detailed research on forestry companies and their activities to NGOs and interested citizen’s groups, we are helping to empower those affected by bad practices. By keeping people informed of the consequences of these practices (eg. On deforestation, livelihoods, way of life), they are more able to make informed decisions and lobby more effectively for desired changes.
