Project Title
Building Capacity in NGOs in the Russian Far East and Siberia to monitor illegal logging operations and the timber trade
Summary
Illegal logging is one of the most significant threats facing Russian forests. Forests Monitor, together with two partner NGOs based in Eastern Russia, Bureau for Regional Outreach and Campaigns (BROC) and Friends of Siberian Forests (FSF) , has launched a project to build civil society capacity to monitor illegal logging and the timber trade.
The project aims to create a cadre of committed NGOs in the region who can produce accurate documentation on cases of illegal logging in order to raise awareness locally, nationally and internationally about the scale of the problem and to provide an effective way of supporting official enforcement measures. The project is part of Forests Monitor's ongoing programme to build civil society capacity to monitor the forestry sector.
